Total Barre™

After rigorous and in-depth development, we’re excited to offer our Total Barre™ program! High-energy and dynamic, Total Barre integrates elements of Pilates, dance, cardio & strength training, and is fully expandable and adaptable to any client base.

The Total Barre workout emphasizes the correct biomechanics of movement combined with the power of music to increase strength, flexibility, stamina and dynamic stability. It is a program geared for everyone—no dance experience or tutus are required! Your clients will be getting not only the safest and most impactful barre program available—they will have fun doing it!

The Total Barre Foundation Course provides the groundwork for Instructors, enabling them to produce safe, effective and varied programs that address the needs and goals of every client. Drawing from the diverse backgrounds of our Instructor-base, the Merrithew Health & Fitness™ (MH&F) team has created this program which will equip Instructors with the knowledge and confidence to design and teach highly evolved standing fitness classes in any setting.

Format – 11 Segments

The Level 1 Foundation Course presents 11 specially arranged and selected segments to serve as the template for each session or class. Each Total Barre class follows this template; however, the specific programming and exercises are determined by the Instructor to address class requirements and objectives. Segments are accompanied by timed selections of music, each at a designated pace. The 11 segments focus on individual areas of the body or movement type and when combined, produce a balanced and complete workout.

Template Benefits

This simple template is instrumental in assisting Instructors to teach well structured, systemized Barre classes.

Once the basic format is presented, Instructors are taught strategies allowing them to progress clients by modifying the primary exercises, creating new variations of those exercises or altering the pace through the accompanying music. Instructors develop awareness to closely monitor the performance of their clients through the understanding of how and why each movement is being performed. This knowledge will create an understanding of how to modify or vary the exercises when necessary by adding props to the movements or altering the rhythm of the music used.

Six Principles

Participants are also introduced to the Total Barre Principles—six movement awareness fundamentals that provide the structure and biomechanical basis for each exercise. During the course, participants have the opportunity to experience the movements before examining the application of the principles and learn the essence of each exercise along with the theories of dynamic stability, optimal mobility and movement efficiency.

Additional Concepts

Programming and exercise choice for each Total Barre class focuses on exercise progressions, movement form and efficiency, and the importance of cueing with music for movement quality. Additional concepts are explored— including the value of cardio-based intervals within a program, suggestions on themes of workouts or programs geared toward specific fitness goals—to add variety and meet the needs of a wide range of clientele. Expertly crafted Total Barre classes will leave clients feeling energized, invigorated and delighted, improving fitness and quality of life, while helping them avoid injury.

All Total Barre Workshops are created by the Merrithew Health & Fitness™ programming team. 

Total Barre™ Endurance with Music™, Level 1 • 4hr

This high-energy four-hour workshop, developed by the Merrithew Health & Fitness™ team, is a great opportunity for Instructors looking to bring music-inspired movement to their clients. Following the class template used in the Total Barre Foundation Course and with the same level of intensity, Instructors learn unique choreography to create a biomechanically well-balanced and fun Barre program. Incorporating light props such as the Flex-Band®, Mini Stability Ball™ and Toning Balls™ gives Instructors more flexibility for their clients in an hour-long, endurance-focused class. A recommended play list of music is provided, as well as suggested beats per minute for each segment, so you can build on this and select your own music to create theme-based classes (i.e. Disco, Acid Jazz, Reggae, and Salsa etc).

Total Barre™ Endurance with Music™, Level 2 • 2hr

Taking things up a notch, this two-hour workshop, developed by the Merrithew Health & Fitness™ team, adds even more neuromuscular challenge to coordination learned in Level 1. Following the class template in the Foundation Course and Endurance with Music, Level 1, this workshop adds balance and strength exercises with the addition of a number of props such as small Handweights or Toning Balls™, Foam Rollers and Ankle Tubing to help challenge and bump up the strength and calorie burning results their clients are after. Working in a continuous flow to keep the heart rate elevated, a recommended play list of music is provided, as well as suggested beats per minute for each segment, to build upon in order to provide clients with an hour-long endurance-plus class.

Total Barre™ Endurance with Music™ for the Active Adult • 2hr

Many people shy away from exercise when they experience limited mobility or restricted movement. Research shows that all active adults can benefit from exercising with music as it helps improve learning and memory, builds self-esteem, reduces stress and increases social interaction. This workshop developed by the Merrithew Health & Fitness™ team, follows the Total Barre template while teaching the appropriate biomechanical principles to help with cueing, motivating and modifying safely for less mobile, active adult clients. Leave with a client program that increases flexibility, balance and postural stability. A recommended play list of music is provided as well as suggested beats per minute for each segment.

Foundation Course Objectives:

  1. Learn creative choreography of a well-balanced Barre workout
  2. Learn to modify and choreograph future workouts with the Course Template
  3. Understand how to break down various movements and explore the stabilization and mobilization required to achieve them
  4. Learn how to cue, correct and modify effectively for all populations
  5. Apply the six Total Barre Foundational Principles
  6. Utilize the suggested beats per minute for each segment of the workout with optional music playlist


This course is intended for those already working in the fields of fitness or movement who hold a related certification and/or degree. Individuals who do not possess this background may still participate in the course and will be issued a letter of completion, but will not be granted an instructor qualification. A history of participation in fitness or movement is highly recommended for anyone wishing to take this course.

Stability Barre™, Pilates Mat, 12″ Mini Stability Ball™, Soft Dumbbells / Hand weights 1.1–2.75lbs, use of props as a focal point / support

Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Credits

By successfully completing the course, participants earn 0.7 STOTT PILATES CECs and other organizations.

RECOMMENDED: Complete the Total Barre Workshops to receive further programming content and choreography that is not covered in the Foundation Course. Currently there are 3 Total Barre workshops with many more to follow.
